Any ideas about how I can narrow it down. Was this comment helpful? I'm looking into this; some users are experiencing problems that are exceptionally difficult to diagnose because of all the variables associated with the issue. Uninstall your antivirus, unplug any unnecessary peripherals, disconnect from the Internet entirely, and perform a clean boot. Then, while in the clean boot environment, try starting the upgrade from there. If you need instructions on how to perform a clean boot, see this support page.

If you do happen to run into the same issue as TimWG, try following the same suggestion I gave him in my last reply and see if that works. You can give it a try and see what happens. Note that you must perform this from your current Windows 7.

What was the problem that occurred using Windows Update and the MCT and at what stage of the installation? This is the only version that installed properly: All other ways would hang on the second reboot. Choose where you want to search below Search Search the Community.

Thanks for your feedback. How satisfied are you with this article? In the months after that original publication, I rechecked, revised, and updated the post several times.

After the first few updates, though, I ran out of old PCs to upgrade; so I tacked on a note at the end of the article, asking readers who tried this technique to use the contact form and let me know how the experience went. In November and December , I received approximately reader messages from all over the world, people who took the time to find the contact form and send details about their Windows 10 upgrade attempts.

For those looking to upgrade a system currently running Windows 7, the process is straightforward:. Before getting started, I recommend confirming that your current system is properly activated. Next, check for any recent driver updates and BIOS updates the latter step is especially important for systems that were originally sold in or earlier, before the release of Windows I also recommend temporarily uninstalling third-party security software.

You can reinstall it after the upgrade is complete. Then disconnect any unnecessary external storage devices until the upgrade is complete. With that out of the way, you go to Microsoft's Download Windows 10 webpage and click the Download tool now button. After the download completes, run the Media Creation Tool, which runs under Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.

Choose the Upgrade this PC now option and follow the instructions. The process typically takes an hour or so sometimes less, sometimes a lot more, especially for an older system but it doesn't require a product key, and when you finish, you have a digital license for Windows As I mentioned earlier, that process works for the overwhelming majority of people.

Among the relatively small group who have reported that the upgrade failed, there were some common factors. Several people were trying unsupported upgrade scenarios. One was attempting to upgrade a PC running Windows 7 Enterprise, and another one was working with an old netbook running Windows 7 Starter.

The free upgrade offer works only with retail editions like Windows 7 Home, Pro, and Ultimate. Roughly once a month I hear from someone who reinstalled Windows 7 or Windows 8. We thought activating via phone would be an automated process where we just punched in the key and got an approval code, but instead we got a live representative who immediately asked for our Microsoft account ID. However, both sites play host to a number of third-party sellers whose product keys may or may not be legit.

The easiest but most expensive way to get Windows is to buy your key directly from Microsoft. You can get these either as downloads or on USB drives. If you have an old Windows key you can carry over from a previous build, that's your best option and effectively gives you Windows 10 or Windows 11 for free.

If you don't have a key on hand, you need to decide whether you're comfortable using an unactivated version of Windows 10 or 11, which limits your customization options, has an ugly watermark and leaves you ineligible for Microsoft support. Many would argue that downloading Windows without paying for or already owning a product key is ethically wrong. That said, Microsoft has made this process easier over various Windows iterations and lessened the limitations and nagging that happens when you don't activate.

We've even seen well-known vendors and Microsoft partners do press presentations with watermarks on their desktop. Scharon Harding has a special affinity for gaming peripherals especially monitors , laptops and virtual reality. Which works but shouldn't be sold. But the similarities stop there. While Windows Server does have a desktop option, Microsoft recommends installing Windows Server without a Graphical User Interface or removing it , leaving just a command line to work which reduces the overhead needed to run the server.

This includes a push to choose Nano Server , which drops the GUI and local login capabilities in exchange for using far less space than the standard Server install. These features allow deployment of an OS remotely to other machines, the creation of static IP address for client machines, control of a network domain for joining other computers to a domain, and creating domain users.

Servers are designed to work in conjunction as well, so you may have one server fulfilling one or two of the roles above, and another server taking on other roles to spread the work. Windows Server also supports more powerful hardware. A desktop user is unlikely even to consider such a large amount of RAM, but servers can make good use of their greater RAM capacity, between managing many users, computers, and potential VMs through Hyper-V.

Windows 10 has a limit on processors as well. Server supports up to 64 sockets. Similarly, a bit copy of Windows 10 only supports 32 cores, and the bit version support cores, but Windows Server has no limit for cores.

Instead of Edge, Windows Server is still using Internet Explorer, and it is locked down to hinder normal web browsing. While Windows 10 lacks server-specific features, it makes up for it in other areas. Installing new software, especially downloaded from the internet, requires few hoops to jump through, and your preferences come with you from one machine to another if you sign in with a Microsoft Account.

Some of these features rely on the Microsoft Store, which Windows Server does not have access to. And if you prefer, you can change Windows 10 to suit your needs and act more like Windows 7.

And if you have Windows 7, 8, or 8. Most purchasers use a Volume License route instead. Windows Server is made primarily for businesses, so it is priced accordingly. But if you want a Windows OS to manage other computers, at home or work, provide a File Server or a web server, then Windows Server is the obvious choice.
